VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), FIN (Fahrzeug-Identifizierungsnummer) or colloquially chassis number is a unique 17-digit serial number for identifying motor vehicles. You can find the VIN/FIN in the vehicle documents (vehicle registration certificate Part I, field E) or stamped on the vehicle itself.

Under German law, the buyer of a misappropriated rental car may become the owner under certain circumstances - but only in case of "good faith acquisition". If the price was suspiciously low or the circumstances were dubious, you will lose the car again.
Unlike theft, misappropriations are not covered by comprehensive insurance. Neither the rental company nor the buyer receives compensation. The financial damage remains.
Be particularly careful with almost new vehicles with a conspicuously low price. Cash payment in parking lots, missing documentation, or pressure for a quick purchase are warning signs.
